W. John Rick,
Senior Lawyer

John was born and raised in Quebec’s Eastern Townships before setting off to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB in 1975.  After graduating from UNB (BSc.) in 1979, John attended McGill University and then the University of Ottawa, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) degree in 1984. After articling, John practiced law with several firms, including a large, nationally-recognized Ottawa firm in their Kanata office.  In 1993, John decided to start his own firm which has grown over the years along with the local community.

John’s practice emphasizes providing legal advice to individuals, entrepreneurs and small and "starting-up" businesses in the areas of:

  • commercial and residential real estate, including the purchase, sale, refinancing, leasing and development of real property;
  • business law, including incorporations, start-up financing, corporate and financial restructuring, shareholder / partnership agreement, business contracts, franchising;
  • wills, powers of attorney and the administration of estates;
  • environmental law, including the remediation of polluted properties.

As part of his professional practice, John has lectured about business law on behalf of a major Canadian Bank to groups of retiring employees from such organizations as Bell Canada (BCE) and government departments such as the Department of National Defence and the Department of Transport.  John has also taught law at Carleton University and Algonquin College.

In addition to his work as a lawyer, John, his wife Barb Bergeron, CA and their family are active members of their community. John has been:

  • Vice-President of the Kanata Business Association;
  • President and Director of the Kanata Chamber of Commerce;
  • founding Director of the World Trade Centre, Ottawa;
  • member of the Kanata Economic Development Task Force appointed in 1992 by Kanata Mayor Merle Nichols to prepare a strategic plan for economic development in the City of Kanata.

John has also assisted the West Carleton Airport Authority managing the Carp Airport, been involved in several community charitable organizations in the Ottawa-Carleton region including as a Member of the Major Gifts Committee of the Community Resource Centre, a Kanata-based community support organization, and also as the Secretary of Operation Go-Home and served as the Incident Committee Chairman of Kanata Soccer.  As well, Rick & Associates sponsors the Kanata Seniors’ Centre and numerous other community groups.

John has been a nominee for a People’s Choice Award (Professional Advisor) sponsored by the Kanata Chamber of Commerce.  In 2010, Rick & Associates won a People’s Choice Award for its work as Kanata’s community law firm.  The firm and its team are proud of the fact that they all actively give back to our community in many forms.

When he is not working or chauffeuring his three children to their various sports and events, John takes an active interest in local politics.  John also has been a goalie with the West Carleton Oldtimers since 1988 (although his rebound control hasn’t improved over the years) and a sponsor of Secours Golden Rescue and Hart Animal Rescue.  You can usually find him on his early morning walks with Fred and Chloe, his two Golden Retrievers.
